The tiger shovelnose hybrid is a type of hybrid catfish, typically resulting from the crossbreeding of a tiger shovelnose catfish (Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum) with another species of large catfish, such as a redtail catfish (Phractocephalus hemioliopterus). These hybrids are popular in the aquarium trade due to their striking appearance and unique mix of traits from both parent species. Here’s some key information about them:

Physical Appearance

    •    Pattern: They often inherit the tiger-like stripes or patterns from the tiger shovelnose parent and sometimes blend it with the darker, solid coloring of the other parent.

    •    Body Shape: Generally elongated and streamlined, similar to the tiger shovelnose.

    •    Size: These hybrids can grow to significant sizes, often reaching 3-4 feet (90-120 cm) in captivity, depending on the genetic makeup.

Care Requirements

    1.    Tank Size: A large tank is necessary—minimum of 300 gallons, though bigger is better, as they are active and grow large.

    2.    Diet: Carnivorous and opportunistic feeders; they thrive on a diet of fish, shrimp, pellets, and meaty foods.

    3.    Water Parameters:

    •    Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C)

    •    pH: 6.5-7.5

    •    Soft to moderately hard water

    4.    Tank Setup:

    •    Provide ample swimming space and hiding spots using driftwood or large caves.

    •    Avoid tankmates small enough to fit in their mouths, as they will see them as food.

Behavior

    •    Semi-aggressive, especially during feeding. Best kept with similarly large, robust tankmates like other large catfish or cichlids.

    •    They are nocturnal by nature but can adapt to being more active during the day in aquariums.

Ethical Considerations

Hybrid fish, including tiger shovelnose hybrids, are bred for the aquarium trade and are not found in the wild. While they are fascinating, some enthusiasts debate the ethics of hybridization, as it does not occur naturally and can sometimes lead to health issues in the fish.

If you’re considering keeping one, ensure you have the resources and space to care for such a large, predatory fish.
