Caring for a snow corn snake in the UK is relatively straightforward, as they are hardy and adapt well to captive conditions. Here’s a detailed guide to their care:

Housing

    •    Enclosure Size: A juvenile can live in a 20-gallon (60 x 30 x 30 cm) tank, but an adult requires a minimum of a 3–4 ft (90–120 cm) long enclosure.

    •    Type: A secure glass or plastic vivarium with proper ventilation. Ensure it has a secure lid to prevent escapes.

    •    Substrate: Aspen shavings, paper towels, or reptile carpet. Avoid pine or cedar, as they release harmful oils.

Heating and Lighting

    •    Temperature Gradient:

    •    Warm side: 27–30°C (81–86°F)

    •    Cool side: 21–24°C (70–75°F)

    •    Use a thermostat to regulate temperatures.

    •    Heat Source: Heat mat or ceramic heat emitter placed on one side of the enclosure.

    •    Lighting: Snow corn snakes do not require UVB lighting, but a light cycle of 12 hours on/off mimics natural conditions. Use LED or fluorescent lights.

    •    Night Temperature: Temperatures can drop slightly at night, but should not fall below 18°C (64°F).

Humidity

    •    Levels: Maintain 40–60% humidity.

    •    Provide a moist hide with damp sphagnum moss for shedding.

Hides and Décor

    •    Hides: At least two hides (one on the warm side, one on the cool side) where the snake can feel secure.

    •    Décor: Include branches, plants (fake or real), and other items for enrichment.

Feeding

    •    Diet: Feed appropriately sized defrosted rodents, such as mice or small rats.

    •    Frequency:

    •    Juveniles: Every 5–7 days.

    •    Adults: Every 7–14 days.

    •    Size: The prey should be no wider than 1.5 times the widest part of the snake’s body.

Water

    •    Provide a shallow water bowl large enough for the snake to soak in. Change the water daily.

Handling

    •    Snow corn snakes are generally docile and easy to handle.

    •    Allow 48 hours after feeding before handling to prevent regurgitation.

    •    Always approach calmly and support the snake’s body when handling.

Health and Shedding

    •    Shedding: Ensure the snake has a humid environment during shedding to prevent issues.

    •    Signs of Illness: Watch for wheezing, mouth gaping, or mites. Consult a reptile vet if you notice unusual behavior or symptoms.

Cleaning

    •    Spot-clean daily and do a deep clean of the enclosure every 4–6 weeks. Replace the substrate entirely during deep cleans.

Lifespan

With proper care, snow corn snakes can live 15–20 years.

If you’re just starting with reptiles, snow corn snakes are an excellent choice due to their manageable care needs and friendly temperament!
